The upcoming of Nintendo hardware draws near. As time is ticking, the release of it it’s just one step closer than ever before. Nintendo has announced that they have intentions of releasing it worldwide in March 2017. The questions remain whether or not the next peripheral will be a handheld or a console. With conformation of NX not having a presence at E3 this year, the questions draws to fans and investors alike, what will NX be and when will we be able to see it before the galore of our eyes?
Current President of Nintendo, Mr. Kimishima has assured fans that their next product will not be a “successor to the Wii U nor to the 3DS” but rather meant to be a new way to play and experience games. How this will play out is yet to be seen.
“It’s a new way of playing games, which I think will have a larger impact than the Wii U, but I don’t feel it’s a pure replacement for the Wii U.” – Kimishima, President of Nintendo
This quote surely strikes some questions into mind. When Kimishima mentions that it won’t be a successor to neither current generation of portable and home consoles, is it possible that both of these pillars can be brought together into one to form a hybrid? Depending on how the company takes the issue of having the costs of manufacturing to the profit it can make out of it, it may not be so out of the realm. Would making the hybrid finally be able to stop the suffering from the development teams working on software. Teams must move onto different projects, sometimes from 3DS to Wii U, Wii U to 3DS, or both at the same time. With these two teams be able to come together, how could it benefit them?
Let’s take a look at how NX can be successful not only to it’s consumers and fans, but to developers, investors, and even those on the brink of wanting to jump on board with the NX for the future. Let’s begin shall we?
Market it to a different demographic
One of the Wii U’s biggest struggles was having customers not knowing the system was different from the original Wii and making older audiences to buy their games. When the system was launched, many of the adverts were aimed at families, bringing them as a whole and being to play all together. One of the few primal example of more mature games marketed for the system was Bayonetta 2. Hack and slash to kill enemies with a killer voice narrator to make the viewer more enticed to the Wii U exclusive. The other more ‘mature’ games for the system either went unnoticed (no TV spots) or not mentioned at all. Wii U desperately needs older consumers to get on board with NX. Simply marketing to a ‘younger audience’ won’t do it anymore.
It’s safe to agree the Game Pad went highly unused to it’s maximum potential. The Game Pad was tremendous in size for a controller. With it’s size came the extra screen, which could be used in some games to play the game on the Game Pad instead of the actual controller or use it for the liking such as inventory. The last time Nintendo developed a normal controller was during the GameCube days (one analog stick, really?) and even that could me argued about not being close to the Xbox/PS2 design. For this generation, the Big N needs to concentrate to make a more traditional controller instead of having lots of gimmicks to it. You want it to feel comfortable for users who are costumed to Xbox One/PS4 scheme, but yet make it have that one thing that separates it completely from the competition. How cool would it be if your NX controller monitor could read your heart rate through your palms and make games play out depending on your heartbeat?
This could mean rhythm based games background music could play either faster or slow down depending on how comfortable your body is reacting. Resident Evil? How about having it spawning zombies at places where you wouldn’t expect cause you’re about to shed into tears? Obviously it might be a long shot, but just like Virtual Reality, it could be a game changer if used properly.
Make Porting Games Easy
The reason why developers didn’t make as many games for the Wii U past the first year was because of it’s system architecture. The Wii U was similar to the Xbox 360 in terms of coding, but when developers starting receiving dev kits for Xbox One and Playstation 4, it made bringing their games even harder since the Wii U didn’t support X64 as the industry leading consoles do. Nintendo can remind us about the good old days where every system needed individual development by a separate team for a multi-platform release. (OpenGL anybody?) If the NX supports Unreal Engine 4, I can assure 3rd party games will become a lot easier.
Sharing The Game Experience
In today’s modern gaming atmosphere, sharing what we play and how we play has become more accessible than ever. With capture cards and even the ability to go live in current-gen hardware, if Nintendo wants it’s fans and developers to flagship not only current console owners, but one’s that might become potential customers, they will need to make live streaming a big deal. Having to ability to go live on YouTube or Twitch on every game will do it. Not saying it needs to be the most complicated program available, but make it easy to export certain aspects you would be able to do on a PC. Possibly through the use of an USB stick be able to add border layouts you could have made in Photoshop. Of course, adding a 3.0 port through the use of an external capture card to make the input delay more minimal. Additionally, being able to share snippets of videos and photos on social media website like Twitter and Facebook will help market the games the console play’s by virtually not spending an extra dime on social media.
You can have the most beautiful and cutting edge technology in the market, but what good does it do if the battery life won’t last long enough in order for customers to feel satisfied with a gaming session they’ve had? With NX to be rumored to be a hybrid of a handheld and home console, being able to sustain a long battery life on a train, bus, or even plane would be spectacular. We know NX will be getting The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sometime during the machine’s early lifetime. Exploring a vast mountain and you see the red light of death? That would be unfortunate. Of course, having a machine at full brightness and max settings makes a machine’s battery shorter, but hopefully even on mid-tier settings, the NX can sustain a more acceptable battery life compared to the 3DS. In fact, the Wii U is the most efficient console in terms of electricity
Don’t Overprice It
Big problem that the company has had. Suffering from price points that made new customers wanting to access the machine made it difficult to make the final decision of purchasing one of their products. Every company that sells products of course wants their products to make a return when selling it, but thing’s don’t always work out as planned out. In 2011, the original Nintendo 3DS launched for a whopping $249.99, a price that is out of the roof if you consider the size and the raw power the machine could produce. 6 months later, the handheld price point was slashed by 80 dollars. Something unprecedented within the early lifetime of a game machine. Thankfully. the 3DS has had a long way since then to recover and has gone on to become the best selling machine this generation handheld wise. In fact, a even more affordable model was introduced, the 2DS. Although it didn’t play content in 3D and no hinges, the handheld was a great entry point for people who didn’t want to spend to much on hardware. Unfortunately, for the Wii U, it was never quite able to recover from it’s woes. In September 2013, the console dropped from $349.99 to $299.99, a fifty dollar price cut. The console never did rebound from there. The Wii U has not had a lot of big time sellers since launch. Yes, the attach rate for first party games is high for many games, but for the little amount of third-party titles that made it to Wii U, they either fell from abysmal to mediocre in terms of sales. Nintendo, please hear my pleads and don’t make the machine more expensive that it needs to.
Make Games Fun
It’s what you’re best at. The philosophy at the company has always been to make the games produced accessible, fun, and make your money’s worth for them. The charm and charisma a Nintendo title delivers is impeccable. For gamers who grew up as early on the NES, but later went on to purchase an Xbox One and/or Playstation 4 felt the inclination to own a Big N console once again. This generation brought titles like Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and many more that I can list. The games this generation took on was usually the core of the series philosophy, but made them different enough while retaining the charm of the originals to make the games feel new and enjoyable. Just like a fruit in the supermarket, something too old goes to rot. Don’t be the expired apple in the shelf, make yourself diverse and different. If Nintendo can appeal to existing and new owners (whether they consider themselves ‘casual’ or ‘hardcore’) don’t loose your sight on the big picture, make great games that makes not only want owners to play, but great enough to make third parties want to bring games on their platforms to NX.
